Spirituality and Suicide – A Vincent VanGogh-ish Story

Spirituality, Meditation and Energy Healing

533453206_28ea2e47f6_zA dear, dear friend of mine recently took his own life.  Maybe I’ll stop crying in a couple of weeks.

Some people said it was the ultimate act of cowardice and selfishness.  However, I’ll leave those judgements for people who didn’t know Vince.  They simply didn’t understand.

Vince was the most gifted and talented person I ever met.  He was a visual artist whose works garnished the walls of New York City galleries.  He had a beautiful voice and played acoustic guitar with the best of them.  He was a published author who wrote children’s books. as well as non-fiction and fiction for adults.  When he left high school he passed up an opportunity to enroll in a prestigious east coast ballet academy to take a full-ride gymnastics scholarship.  When his gymnastics days came to an end, he took up whitewater kayaking and conquered some of the toughest rivers in the Northwest.

That’s when I met him.  It was on a weekend camping and kayaking trip with a bunch of mild-mannered outdoor enthusiasts.

I learned around the campfire that night, Vince was also a spiritual healer.  That explained his other gifts and his tendency toward creative genius.  He was plugged in to a higher power 24/7.   He had a long list of miraculous healings he’d taken people through.  He cured people of all sorts of emotional trauma and financial problems.  And there were also major physical healings.  That was what he was most proud of, his ability to take people out of chronic physical pain.  The twinkle in his eyes indicated nothing was more satisfying.

The emergency ward at the local hospital let him volunteer his craft in the waiting room.  His healings were so profound, the newspaper even went to the trouble to write an article on him…The Miracle Maker.

On top of that, not only was he the most gifted person I ever met, but also the most intelligent, gentle, sincere, kind and giving.  Never in all my days have I ever run across anyone like him.  In spiritual circles, I think they’d call him an embodied Guardian Angel.

However, with all his enormous blessings, Vince was also cursed.  It was his personality type.  You see, Vince was a creative free spirit.  He was the preverbal round peg in a square hole.  Due to his free-spirited nature, he was enormously challenged at making a living.  Sure, he worked normal jobs but quickly became bored and restless.  His superior intellect and creativity didn’t lend itself to confinement, routine or mediocrity.

And like most of us guys, whether he wanted to admit it or not, his self esteem was directly tied to how he made a living.  Vince struggled mightily with finding his place in the world and on occasion was overtaken with depression.  As much as he wanted to, he just didn’t fit into the system.

His healing work, although brilliant, was obscure, vague, deeply personal and difficult for many people to understand.  It didn’t market well.  Furthermore, his shy and sensitive persona was a poor fit for the hustle and push of marketing books, CD’s and artwork.  He was a vulnerable artist, not an aggressive salesman.

So after giving his all to life where he gave far more that he ever received, Vince ended his journey of loneliness and perceived failure.  His beautiful, sparkling light was extinguished in a world where he was never valued, appreciated or recognized.

When I found out Vince had taken his life, I was heartbroken but not surprised.  I only wish I could have been with him when he died.

I remember a song written by Don McLean about Vincent VanGogh in the early 1970s, titled Starry Starry Night.  I think it was written for my Vince too.  Part of it went like this:

But I could have told you Vincent

This world was never meant

For one as beautiful

As you

*Dedicated to all the beautiful souls that we can’t or don’t know how to appreciate.*

Meditation Mogul, Andy Puddicombe on Healing Cancer – Does Meditation Help?

Meditation Mogul, Andy Puddicombe on Healing Cancer – Does Meditation Help?

What good is meditation in healing cancer?  Good question.
Andy-Puddicombe.jpeg
From 2003-11, I worked as a spiritual healer at the PeaceHealth Cancer Center in Bellingham, WA, helping cancer patients with healing and meditation.  I witnessed and assisted some patients with absolute miracles.  However, everyone’s road to dealing with cancer was unique as the person experiencing it.
The following article with a former Buddhist monk who contracted cancer, Mind Over Cancer: Can Meditation Aid Recovery?, was excerpted from the The Guardian.
Andy Puddicombe‘s 20 years of (meditation) practice were put to the test when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer last April. While the mindfulness expert and former Tibetan Buddhist monk expected the physical pain after surgery to remove his right testicle, he was surprised by the emotional and mental impact of recovery…
“Puddicombe, who aims to demystify meditation with his Headspace app, explains that mindfulness allows us to step back from our thoughts and feelings and view them with a different perspective. It would be very easy, he adds, to get caught up in negative thinking or feelings of anxiety and depression. But mindfulness gave him enough space to be able to embrace these emotions without getting lost in them.
“Rather than it being a terrible experience, it became a transformative one,” he reveals. “It may sound a bit fluffy, but the reality is anything but.  In fact, it was life-changing.”

Andy Puddicombe and Headspace ask, “So…why do you meditate?”

Spirituality, Meditation and Energy Healing

Andy Puddicombe and Headspace ask, “So…why do you meditate?”

Andy-Puddicombe.jpegI always thought the reason to meditate was to connect to Divine Presence and attain Enlightenment.
Wrong again.
The reason being is that Enlightenment is a vague and nebulous term to define.  The best explanation I’ve ever heard goes like this:
If somebody asks you if you’re Enlightened and you say ‘No’, you probably aren’t.  If somebody asks you if you’re Enlightened and you say ‘Yes’, you still probably aren’t.
I have no clue to what Enlightenment is and I’ve been working within the realms of spirituality and healing my entire adult life.
“So…why do you meditate?
We all do it for different reasons.  Take a look at the meditation mogul, Andy Puddicombe’s, Headspace Blog and see what people are saying.

The Divorce Prevention Kit – How to Stop the Blame and Defend Ritual

Spirituality, Meditation and Energy Healing

The Divorce Prevention Kit – How to Stop the Blame/Defend Ritual

Blame and Defend.  Blame and Defend.  And the carousel goes ‘round and ‘round.
2573762303_365ac020f8_zSometimes to get out of the cycle, the realm of repair might be within our grasp, or even inside of us?
Picture this.
A couple is out to dinner at their favorite fancy restaurant.  To charge it up, let’s say it’s Valentine’s Day.   As they’re sipping a glass of wine, a mutual acquaintance walks up to their table and says hello.  The three of them exchange light pleasantries for a few moments.  After the brief encounter, the conversation at the table between the couple shifts gears.
Woman:  “Why didn’t you just get up and take her clothes off.  You practically undressed her with your eyes.”
Man:  “What?  Are you out of your mind?  What are you talking about?  All I did was say hello.  I wasn’t doing anything.  Geez, get a grip.”
Blame and Defend.
Statistics tells us that roughly 50% of marriages end up in divorce.  Of those 50%, I’m guessing that at least half are victims of the Blame/Defend Ritual.  There’s another word for it.  It’s call projection.  And the weird part is, it usually doesn’t have anything to do with the marriage itself.  That’s fairly easy to discern if the same issues come up in the next relationship.
Projection happens when we spew unresolved emotion from the past (i.e. fear, anger, pain) into the present situation.  Both the man and woman of the Valentine’s Day dinner were unsuspecting contestants in the game.  The woman’s insecurity was triggered because her father left her mother for another woman when she was four years old.  The man was making an inappropriate connection with their acquaintance, to fill his insatiable neediness that was caused by being raised and neglected in an alcoholic family.
If you’re reading this and feeling a little holier-than-thou because you’ve never sunk to such low levels of behavior…look again.  We all do it.  No one is exempt.  Your projection just might not show up in your primary relationship.  But it might at work, or with your kids, or with the way you handle money.  In fact, the scenarios are endless.
So what do you do to make the Blame/Defend Ritual stop?
Well, it’s not as hard as you might think.  The first step is awareness.  Recognize you’re caught in the Blame/Defend game and that you have a tendency to project unresolved emotions.  That will be about 90% of the cure.
Next, take responsibility for your role and catch yourself in the act.  Then decide to stop the pattern.  Realize you are creating your own suffering.  If your partner can do the same, the beauty of relationship may be just around the corner.
After that, learn how to release suppressed emotion from the past.  It’s not that difficult.  When your emotion next presents itself, close your eyes and pay attention to where you feel it in your body.  Then with gentle focused concentration, feel it until it releases.  This is a very basic meditation/spiritual skill that can be mastered with a little practice and consistent effort.  It’s a tool to free you from the past.
It will also save your marriage.  It might even create genuine, long-lasting intimacy.

A Mind Blowing Spiritual Awakening – Tony Robbins meets Oneness University, Part 2 of 5

A  Mind Blowing Spiritual Awakening

Tony Robbins meets Oneness University, Part 2 of 5

Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  Part 4  Part 5

Taken from modified excerpts of my book:

The Subconscious, the Divine and Me

The_Point_(Fiji)In 2008-09, I had two mind blowing spiritual awakening weeks through Oneness University that changed my life forever.

At the end of my last blog, I left our hero dangling at a spiritual retreat put on by Oneness University in Fiji.  He had just experienced his first energy download through the image of  Tony Robbins.  Let’s see what the Divine has up its sleeve now.

Two days later, the theme of the day was joy.  The leaders of the retreat we’re really bringing the juice, as we entered meditation.  Joy was in the air.  As we collectively settled into a trance state, people started breaking out into laughter.   It was hilarious.  As the meditation continued, it hit me too.  I laughed so hard, tears just started rolling.  It was everything I could do to keep from wetting my pants.

As the laughter gradually receded, I rolled over on all fours and my body began to uncontrollably rock from head to front.  I couldn’t stop it.  At the same time, I felt an intense pressure encompassing the top part of my skull.  I felt like a baby getting forced through a birth canal.  It was incredibly intense.  I hurt all over, especially around my temples.  Later, I learned this is called a re-birthing experience.  It can happen at the beginning of a major life transformation.

As I imagined myself coming out of the birth canal, it felt like my crown chakra burst open with brilliant light.  As I pushed through, guess who was there to greet me.  That’s right…Tony Robbins.  I thought, “Not again, doesn’t this guy ever give up?”  This time he was standing there, pointing straight at me with his arm and fingers extended, as if he had just completed a karate chop.  All of a sudden, energy started streaming out of his fingers and a wall of electricity rose up behind him and came at me like a river at flood stage.  I was completely engulfed.  My body started jerking around on the floor like I was having a seizure.  As the last of the energy flowed into my body, it picked up the image of Tony (again) and drove him through the top of my head and straight into my heart chakra, like another runaway locomotive.

Bam!  Download number two.  To be continued…

Words from the Power Mystic, Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee

Meditation, Spirituality and Energy Healing

Wisdom from Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee

Spirituality is born of Divine expereince, not belief.  It’s a relationship with your higher power.

150px-VaughanLee_photoIn the quest of spiritual awakening here are a few words of wisdom from one of my favorite contemporary mystics.  I highly recommend his books and videos for insight into the living world of God.

This passage was lifted off the website of the Contemplative Journal and is excerpted from Lee’s book Fragments of a Love Story, Reflections on the Life of a Mystic.

“The mystical journey may begin with making a relationship with one’s inner light, but the mystic is drawn on a deeper journey towards love’s greatest secret: within the heart we are one with the divine. The fire of mystical love is a burning which destroys all sense of a separate self, until nothing is left but love Itself. While the spiritual seeker is drawn to the light of this fire, the mystic is the moth consumed by its flames. Rumi, love’s greatest mystical poet, summed up his whole life in two lines:

“And the result is not more than these three words:
I burnt, and burnt, and burnt.”

fijismIn 2008-09, I had two mind blowing spiritual awakening weeks in Fiji  and India that changed my life forever.

For a brief period of time the world-class spiritual institution based out of India, Oneness University, crossed paths with Tony Robbins.  From about 2008-2010 Oneness held annexed course at Namale, Tony’s 5-star resort on Vanua Levu, the second largest island of Fiji.  It was an incredible convergence of two major, global, spiritual forces.  When I arrived there in September of 2008, I had no idea what I was walking into.

For me, it was a big deal because it was a week long.  I was working as a geologist and barely had enough time to squeeze it in and get the time off.   Plus, it was very expensive.  I wasn’t really sure why I wanted to go, other than the fact I had been working long and hard in northern Canada.  I needed a break.

When I decided to attend, something happened that isn’t unusual for participates going on spiritual retreats.  My growth process started.  Even though the event was weeks away, parts of my life that needed healing came up with vigor.  Issues in my relationship came up so strong, it caused an anxiety attack that lasted nearly a week.  It was a massive suppressed emotion, originating from somewhere in my past.  At that time, I didn’t really know how to deal with it.  So I kind of beat it back with a stick into the subconscious.  I had an inkling this retreat could be major.

On my way to the retreat, I felt pretty ambivalent about going.  Even though I was in the airplane, my heart was pretty non-committal.  I just wasn’t into it.  Apparently, that didn’t sit very well with the Divine, who wanted my presence whole-heartedly or not at all.  I had no way of knowing, but a defining synchronicity was one its way.

Because the retreat was in Fiji and required an international flight, I had to change planes at LAX.  As I presented my passport to the ticket agent she said, “We can’t accept this.  It has water damage.  You’ll have to get another one.”  I was livid and retorted, “What!?!  Another passport?  I’ve been using this passport for the last three years to work internationally; Canada, Denmark and Sweden!  No one has ever questioned it!  You’re not even an immigration official.  How can you deny me entry into another county?”  Unflinchingly she replied, “Sorry, airline policy.”  She wasn’t going to budge.

The retreat was still two days off.  If I was lucky, I could get an emergency passport from the federal building in LA at Brentwood.  Or I could just bag it and go back home.  I’m sure the retreat would have refunded my money.  I had a choice to make.  I could make the effort or blow it off.  (Decision is one of the most powerful forces in the subconscious)  After pissing and moaning for a while, I toughened up and decided to go.  With that decision and intention established, the Divine set me up for one of the wildest times of my life.  And this was only the beginning.

I fortuitously got a new passport and arrived at the retreat with everyone else.   Apparently, there was a high-profile celebrity at the retreat which was creating a bit of a buzz with the participants.  It was Tony Robbins.  He wasn’t really the focus of the Oneness event, he was just happened to own the facility.  It was his version of hanging out.  I had never heard of him before and when someone explained to me who he was, I replied, “Ohhhhhh…”

I had never been around anyone like him.  This guy was a force of nature.  He could sit quietly in the corner and command everyone’s attention just by his presence.  He carried tons of energy.  I was actually mildly annoyed he was there.  I wanted to utilize this week to go inward, without disruption.  It seemed like Tony could be a gigantic distraction.  How was I supposed to know the Divine was going to use him to help me?  Tony was going to be a supreme conduit of Divine energy, assisting me in my awakening process.  The weird part was, I would neither meet nor speak with him the entire time I was there.

On the first full day of the retreat, we were guided in meditation to experience the Divine.  We were instructed to relax deeply and imagine the Divine in any way it presented itself.  As I drifted in deep, guess who shows up…Tony Robbins.  I couldn’t believe it.  I was actually kind of pissed off.  I was saying inside, “C’mon, not this, anybody but him.”  I tried to shake him off but my imagination wouldn’t let it go.  He was there bigger than life and he wasn’t going away.  Deciding not to resist, I invited him in.  At that very moment, the image of Tony entered my body with the speed of a locomotive.  I could feel and hear something hit my chest so hard, I gasped for air.  Tony went straight into my heart chakra and exploded.

OK, that was weird.  Download number one.  To be continued…
