How to Start Meditating – A Few Tips for Beginners

Meditation, Mindfulness, Healing & Spirituality

I’ve been teaching meditation, healing, and spirituality techniques for well over two decades. What I’ve learned from personal experience and the thousands of people I’ve worked with, is that in the beginning, meditation can be kind of difficult.

Your mind wanders, you get bored, you’re not sure if you’re doing it right, etc., etc. Well, if that’s the case, then why do so many people meditate? There must be something to it.

I guarantee you, there is. Mindfulness, yoga, spirituality, energy healing, and other meditative practices are popular now for a reason!  When you begin to meditate, you’re knocking on the door on a whole new universe, just waiting to open.

How Meditation and Deep Relaxation Attracts Relationships

Meditation, Mindfulness, Healing & Spirituality

Meditation has all sorts of documented benefits.  It can improve our physical health, help us reduce stress, give us a renewed sense of clarity and purpose, enhance our creativity, and connect us to a benevolent presence much larger than ourselves.

In fact, I can’t think of any negative consequences born of meditation.  It provides the foundation for a very healthy and well adjusted life.

But meditation can do even more.  Check out the following video to gain a few insights about the benefits of meditation you may not have considered before.  Deep relaxation, mindfulness, healing and spirituality.  It’s magic worth working for.

Why Do You Meditate?

Meditation, Mindfulness, Healing & Spirituality

Meditation is becoming quite the rage these days.  I wonder why?  Is it to deeply relax, reduce stress, and find a mindfulness calm?  Or is it to heal unsettling emotions?  Maybe to quiet an overactive mind?  Or is that many people are meditating to tap into their enormous well of creativity?  Or could it be there’s a massive mystical movement of connecting to an energy that goes beyond us all?

I enthusiastically say yes to all of the above.  In fact, I even meditate for a reason most folks don’t even think about.  Check out the video below to find out.

Why do you meditate?

Does Meditation Lead to Happiness? Ask Meditation Expert, Andrew Shykofsky

Meditation, Mindfulness, Healing & Spirituality

I’m honored to introduce author and meditation expert, Andrew Shykofsky, as my guest blogger today.

No need for me to begin this article talking about the benefits of meditation. It’s all been covered by a thousand other writers before me. So let’s get right to the heart of the matter; does meditation make you happy?

Unfortunately, the real answer is… it depends.

Believe it or not, some twenty years ago, I took a shot at playing poker on a professional level. And in case you’re wondering, I was in fact meditating at that time!  I wasn’t ready to really make God central to my life (as has become my reality now).

Like all the things I get serious about, I studied poker intensely. I read all the recommended strategy books I could find (no YouTube back in 1998). Many students of poker would ask the same question; ‘What do I do in such and such situation?’ Everyone wanted a rule they could follow when the moment came about. They didn’t want to have to figure out the best course of action and take unnecessary chances.

The pros who had demonstrated profitability over the long term always said the same thing to that very question…’It depends.’ In poker, the factors making up a specific situation are always changing. So it depends who is in the hand, what your image is like at the table, who bet before you, who will bet after you, what your odds of improving are, what you think your opponent has…

So you can see those factors will never be quite the same in any two poker hands.

Now back to meditation. Meditation does not automatically steer you to happiness. Meditation as I teach it is a way to train your mind to function at the highest level it can. When your mind is trained, you can quiet it with much greater success.

I also teach meditation as a tool to process negative emotions so you can move through them promptly. This means much less time in states of anxiety, fear, sadness, worry, anger and even depression. All the answers to what is causing those internal states can be found when meditating.

The reason the answer to whether meditation brings happiness is ‘it depends’ is that even learning solid techniques of concentration does not guarantee a practitioner will cultivate the happiness they feel is lacking.

Think of it like this; I give you a hammer, nails, measuring tape, power saw and whatever else you need to build a shed. You have enough wood and have been shown how to build the shed. So will it get built? Well, really it depends. It depends on if you paid attention when you were being taught. It depends on if you are willing to take your time and avoid mistakes. But mostly it depends on one thing… do you WANT to build the shed?

The very same thing applies in meditation. Throughout the 10 years I have been teaching meditation, the great majority of my students taught have been beginners. Everyone begins wanting the benefits of meditation. But not everyone wants them bad enough to keep trying when it gets hard.

Specifically, happiness is almost universally the goal that people say they want. What makes this guy happy or that woman may be different. Each has to define what they believe will make them happy and then set out to manifest those very things, whether they be internal things or external things.

For me, happiness comes more easily when my internal life is flowing smoothly but when outer challenges come, like getting a parking ticket that seems unfair, or being rejected by someone I like or having a negative interaction with someone in the world, I feel those emotions.

I use meditation to process the feelings and let them go but when in states of frustration, happiness eludes me. I have to work to get back there. And luckily, I know how. I was taught and I paid attention and I kept trying until I got to be decent at it.

I don’t think happiness would’ve just come through meditation if I did not make that one of the focuses. If you are someone who is considering meditation because you want to be happier, the good news is that it can work. Besides meditation (or during meditation), contemplate what you feel will lead to happiness for you and then strive to actualize those things.

A simple list might look like this;

  1. A real relationship with God that feels personal
  2. A spouse whom I love and whom loves me
  3. We live harmoniously together in a city we both like
  4. Her and I both meditate and value spirituality
  5. I have a killer job that really inspires me
  6. My student loans are paid off and I am saving $XXXX per year
  7. I have little to no anxiety and if I feel anxious, I know how to move through it quickly
  8. My relationship with my younger brother is repaired

Bonus: We have a President that inspires me!

You can meditate an hour a day and then do nothing to draw the above reality to you. Or you can meditate and get active, using all the energy that meditation can muster and make the above list your reality. Will you do it? Well, it depends on how bad you want it!

Meditation, Technology and Business – What a Combo!

Meditation, Mindfulness, Healing & Spirituality

I was born in the year 25 B.C. (Before Computers).  I still vividly remember when kids used to play outside and when illuminated screens were only in the living room.

When I was young I was taught, “If you want a good job, you need a good education.  If you plan and save wisely, you’ll have a nice pension and a gold watch waiting for you at retirement.”

I guess I don’t have to tell you those days are gone.  What my generation was educated and trained to do has long since dissolved into the ether of cyberspace.

So what to do?  I’m too old to be retrained for a new career and my former career has evaporated into Electronica.  What to do?  What to do?

The answer is easy.  Do what everybody else is doing.  Do biz on-line.

Meditation, Healing, Mindfulness, Spirituality, Energy Healing, Relaxation, Consciousness

This year I dove into the deep end of internet entrepreneurship.  Talk about a steep learning curve.  There’s so many moving parts my head feels like it’s turning into a computer.

I’ve tried it before but it didn’t take long to burnout and splat into a brick wall.  So what did I do?  I gave up and went to do something more fun (i.e. writing books, making art, building boats, meditating in deep relaxation, etc.).

However, I can’t quit this time.  The wolves are circling outside my front door.  This is it.  This is the only foreseeable option.  Thank goodness, I’ve had help.  I could never negotiate this jungle on my own.

The only problem is, last week I splatted into the same brick wall.  Endless hours on my computer and the internet with seemingly minimal results.  Electronic burnout…again.

Wait a minute.  I teach meditation.  I’m supposed to be filled with mindfulness, consciousness, and all that jazz.  I’m not supposed to be an eyes-glazed-over, stressed out, robot head.

So what did I do?  I quit and went outside.  I fed my soul with the mediation elixir of life itself.  I did some nature.  It’s there where I find myself and drink in the juice that recharges my batteries.  It’s why I’m in this life.  I’m here to feed my soul so I can help others do the same.

Then what did I do?  I went back to the cyber grind.  I guess that’s why I’m in this life too.  Gotta get the word out, ya know.

If you’re overwhelmed in the accelerating cyber world we live in, I highly encourage you to shut it off for a while.  Do some nature, go outside, feed your soul.  Or if that doesn’t work, stop by my new on-line meditation class listed below and we’ll meditate and find peace together…on-line.

A Mind Blowing Spiritual Awakening – Tony Robbins meets Oneness University, Part 5 of 5

Spirituality, Meditation, Mindfulness and Healing

A  Mind Blowing Spiritual Awakening

Tony Robbins meets Oneness University, Part 5 of 5

Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  Part 4  Part 5

Taken from modified excerpts of my book:

The Subconscious, the Divine and Me

The_Point_(Fiji)

In 2008-09, I had two mind blowing spiritual awakening weeks through Oneness University , that changed my life  forever.

So far, in the last four blogs I received four life-changing Divine downloads through the image of Tony Robbins during retreats put on by Oneness University in Fiji and India. Now it was time to go home.

When I returned home, everything changed.  My life completely imploded.  Within a few weeks, I was living in a one-room basement apartment wondering, what the hell just happened.  It was simple, I had gone through a complete internal transformation and this was the beginning of a new life.  My inner life was being reflected out into my external world.  Where ever I was going, I needed to let go of everything to get there.  It was devastating.

Even though I had worked with the subconscious mind for years, I was now emerging as a healer.  The retreats opened me up to Divine energy.  I could feel it come blasting through in my sessions.  Healings that began to occur were phenomenal; cancer, depression, eating disorders, relationships, compulsive disorders, anxiety attacks.  It was uncanny.

The Subconscious, the Divine and Me

The_Point_(Fiji)

In 2008-09, I had two mind blowing spiritual awakening weeks through Oneness University , that changed my life  forever.

So far, in the last three blogs I received three life-changing Divine downloads through the image of Tony Robbins during a retreat put on by Oneness University in Fiji.  After the last one, I was sure I was losing my mind.

For three days after the retreat, I stayed in a hotel near a small port town.  The previous week was incredibly intense.  I was exhausted, in shock and needed rest.  I had no idea what happened.  It would take me months to piece it together.  When I returned home, my life went on as usual.  The only difference I noticed was it felt as if my lower three chakras were blown wide open.  I could feel it all the time.

About six months later, I returned to a follow-up retreat.  It was given by the same organization, only in a different location.  It was further from home.  The routine was the same with classes and meditations.  However, the teachers weren’t the same.  They were all so young.  Even though the information they presented was sound, it seemed as if they were parroting what they learned in school.  They lacked life experience.  I found it difficult to learn from them.  I had more experience and knowledge.  It wasn’t arrogance on my part.  Something wasn’t ringing as true.

After five days, I was beginning to feel like I wasted my time and money.  Nothing was happening; no insights, no mystical experiences, nothing.  Nonetheless, here I was, so I might as well try to make the best of it.   Keep the ol’ chin up sort of thing.

The last day of the retreat was my 50th birthday and the final presentation was to be given that evening.  To be quite honest, I was thinking about skipping it, so I could go for an evening stroll.  I wanted to go home.  As soon as the group assembled, our instructor walked in.  Much to everyone’s surprise, it was our modern-day guru from the videos of the previous retreat.  What a pleasant surprise.  This time he showed up in flesh and blood.

Once again the surreal started to unfold.  During the three hour presentation, he would frequently pause, as if connecting with the Divine, and stare into space with his eyes lightly glazed over.  He consistently fixed his gaze in my direction and I fell into a very deep trance.  As our eyes connected, it felt as if waves of electricity were being transmitted from him to me.  It was wild.  This went on for about two hours.  My remaining upper chakras were blown open.

Happy Birthday.  Download number four.
